Lionel Messi nearly landed himself in hot water after failing to appear for post-game interviews after Inter Miami’s victory last weekend.

The Miami Herald reports that 400 journalists were present at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday night, so many that NY Red Bulls were forced to erect a a tent in the loading dock to expand the capacity.

However Messi, who would have been the focus of almost all reporters in attendance, was not made available for interviews. MLS regulations state that players have to be available for comment 15 minutes after full time.

It had been reported that Messi could face disciplinary measures for failing to appear, but league officials have since announced that he will not be punished.

An MLS statement confirmed: “There was a misunderstanding regarding Lionel Messi’s media access. He has not violated any guidelines for his media availability in Major League Soccer.”

Does Lionel Messi have to give MLS interviews?

Messi has brought an avalanche of new interest and greater coverage for MLS. Since his arrival every single Inter Miami game has been a sell-out and the commercial side of the league is booming.

However that immense popularity has overwhelmed some elements of league practices. The press room at Miami’s DRV PNK Stadium fits around 65 people, but several hundred members of the press now apply for credentials for each game.
