Culley fired for Flores’ hire?

It was just a few days ago when the Texans fired head coach David Culley. Interestingly, his dismissal came almost immediately after Flores himself was let go. Flores for his part has a long history with Texans general manager Nick Caserio with whom he worked as a scout for the New England Patriots. Going back as far as 2004 when he first joined the Patriots as a scouting assistant, Flores and Caserio have developed close ties. With all of this in mind, it would seem that Caserio has made his move, meaning old friends reunite.

Flores’ appeal and the Deshaun Watson problem

With Flores at the helm, the Dolphins won eight of their final nine games with the Dolphins. Indeed, this season Flores and the Dolphins were in the hunt for a playoff spot until they were derailed in the last two weeks of the season. and had the team alive for a potential playoff spot within the final two weeks the past two seasons. It is also understood that there are a number of managers within the franchise who are very much in favor of Flores.

With Brian Flores out in Miami, the chances of the Dolphins pursuing or acquiring Texans’ QB Deshaun Watson are greatly diminished, if not gone, per sources. Flores had an interest in exploring a Watson deal, but others in organization, including owner Steven Ross, did not.

There is also the question of Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson who incidentally is known to be a fan of Flores. Watson has been under fire of late, which in turn has created a headache for the Texans. Having faced a number of allegations regarding sexual misconduct and sexual assault, Watson missed a large part of the 2021 season. Whether he can put that aside or not will be tested soon enough.
