Super Bowl Sunday is a great excuse for friends and family to get together to watch the game (even for non-football fans!) and share some beer and a lot of snacks.

Football fans are gearing up for the Super Bowl LVI showdown between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams on Feb. 13, and they are ready to spend a pretty penny for the Sunday party.

Super Bowl Sunday has become a non-official holiday in the US, when friends and family get together to cheer for their favorite teams, including those who are not necessarily fans of football. It’s also a time to share a lot of snacks, and according to the US Department of Agriculture, it’s actually one of the biggest food consumption days in the country- second only to Thanksgiving.

Billions in Super Bowl snacks

Spending during Super Bowl Sunday reaches billions of dollars annually, with most of the money being used for food and drinks.

Other party expenses include the purchase of televisions, furniture, decorations, and team apparel or accessories. According to statista.com, football fans’ spending has ranged from from $71.51 to $89.05 on this day from 2011 to 2021.

Last year, in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic, the Super Bowl failed to pass the 100-million viewer mark. Only 96.4 million watched as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers routed the Kansas City Chiefs, 31-9. This was the worst viewer rating for a Super Bowl game since 2007, when the Indianapolis Colts bested the Chicago Bears 29-17.

Due to the lower number of fans watching the game, average consumer spending dipped from $88.65 in 2020 to $74.55 last year. Planned Super Bowl spending for the whole country in 2021 had an estimated total of $13.9 billion, down $3.3 billion compared to the year before.

Beer and wings

To give a more concrete idea of how much food is consumed on this day, the World Food Program last year estimated that Americans would drink approximately 112 million gallons of beer, and eat 28 million pounds of chips and 1.3 billion chicken wings during the Super Bowl.
