The Dallas Mavericks are back in the Finals for the first time since 2011 and have a chance to bring the Larry O’Brien Trophy back to Big D for the just the second time in franchise history. While Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are the stars on the court, Jason Kidd is a star in his own right from the sidelines.

The Kidd back in Dallas

Kidd had a long and illustrious career as a point guard in the NBA, leaving his mark on a handful of NBA teams, including the Dallas Mavericks. He was drafted by the Mavs in 1994 and spent two years there before heading to Phoenix for the next five seasons. After that he spent time in New Jersey and then returned to the Mavs where he helped the team win their first NBA title in 2011.

He finished up his career in New York, playing one season with the Knicks before heading into coaching. It didn’t take long before he got his first head coaching job with the Brooklyn Nets. He lasted only a year before he was dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks for two second round draft picks.

He would take the Bucks to the playoffs in three of his four years, but his teams were failing to make any noise in the playoffs, and he was let go midway through his fifth season with the team. After his time in Milwaukee, he would go to LA and serve as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers under Frank Vogel. In his two years there, he would help lead LA to an NBA title in the bubble.

Here for the long haul

In 2021 the Mavs came calling looking to replace Rick Carlisle who resigned from his role as head coach after 13 years. Kidd signed a four year deal that made him one of the highest paid coaches in the NBA. The deal was worth $8 million a year, and in early May, the Mavs signed their former point guard to a mutli year contract after rumors swirled of the Lakers shortlisting Kidd to replace Darvin Hamm on the sidelines.
